During a recent electromagnetic survey in Oxfordshire, I measured electromagnetic fields in a client's bedroom and discovered several electrical concerns that could impact sleep and overall health.
Identifying Dirty Electricity in the Bedroom
Using an AM/FM radio, I noticed a substantial spike in buzzing and whining from one of the walls. Alongside this was a clear, distinct rhythmic popping sound. These are classic signs of dirty electricity.
Dirty electricity refers to voltage transients and harmonics riding on a standard 50Hz power supply. Instead of a clean sine wave, these transients distort into abrupt changes, which are known to trigger biological stress responses.
In Building Biology, the bedroom is the most critical space to optimise because our bodies perform repair and recovery during sleep.
Strong transient waves near the bed can increase oxidative stress, free radical formation, and disruption of melatonin. Affecting sleep and circadian rhythms.
How to Fix Dirty Electricity in Your Bedroom
Dirty electricity can affect the entire home, impacting both appliances and occupants. Our next step was to isolate circuit breakers to identify the source of the popping noise. Initial impressions suggested devices like dehumidifiers, cycling power, or fish tank motors.
Bedroom Electromagnetic Survey: Capacitive Coupling Risks
Directly behind the top left corner of the bed, behind the pillow, we recorded a high electric field reading 400 volts per meter (V/m). According to Building Biology guidelines, anything over 10 V/m is considered Extreme. This was 40 times the recommended amount.
Having this electric field behind your head while sleeping is concerning and may explain symptoms such as fatigue and poor focus during the day.
The vertical riser supplying power through the house may be radiating behind the bed. Additionally, the metal bedframe was emitting its own electric field through capacitive coupling.
When near a strong electric field, metal structures absorb and redistribute energy, becoming part of the field's pathway and potentially increasing body voltage even without direct contact.
How Metal Bedframes Amplify Electric Fields While You Sleep
Further investigation is needed to confirm if the vertical riser was the source. If not, we would use elimination to determine which circuit breaker was causing the electric field.
Mattress EMF Assessment: Electric & Magnetic Field Readings
As part of our electromagnetic survey, we tested the mattress for AC electric and AC magnetic fields. Measurements showed elevated electric fields and moderate magnetic fields. While not hazardous, these may contribute to sleep disturbances, morning fatigue, or subtle health effects, particularly for individuals with sensitive health conditions.
We also observed a plug-in LED lamp with its cable trailing under the bed and radiator to the bedside table. The LED emitted 400 V/m when switched on, while the plug showed 540 V/m, creating electric fields that pushed toward the mattress. This appeared to be another case of capacitive coupling between the radiator, bedframe, and cable.

How to Reduce Electric Fields in Your Mattress
The LED lamp had poor shielding. We advised the owner to replace it or unplug it when not in use to reduce EMF exposure.
Why Bedroom EMF Matters
Your bedroom should be the safest space in your home. A sanctuary for deep rest and repair. Yet, as this electromagnetic survey revealed, hidden electrical fields and dirty electricity can undermine recovery time, contributing to fatigue, poor focus, and disrupted sleep.
These issues are measurable, manageable, and often resolved with simple steps. By identifying sources and reducing exposure, you can restore balance to your sleeping environment and support long-term wellbeing.
